Au Pair in China
For those of you wanting to immerse yourself in another culture, learn some Mandarin and look after children at the same time – this option is the perfect choice for you.
This is an affordable and supportive option for Kiwis with childcare experience, wanting to live in China for 3-12 months legally. You’ll be placed with a Host Family and will help care for their child/children and speak English with them. This is an amazing cultural exchange – and really subsidised so you don’t need loads of $$ saved to do it. #affordableBigOE
Our partners in China support you throughout your stay and take very good care of you while you are an au pair there. This includes arrival transfers, orientation and ongoing support and activities.
You’ll get:
  • A private room (all positions are live in) in a well screened family
  • At least 1.5 days off a week
  • A Cultural Exchange Visa
  • Arrival transfer and orientation for three days – accommodation and meals provided
  • A city tour during orientation
  • Assurance you’ll work no more than 30 hours a week so you get a chance to explore the country and experience the culture outside of the family (as well as with the family).
  • 1 complete free weekend off per month
  • 1500 RMB monthly pocket money
  • 3 paid days holiday every three months
  • A City Based Local Coordinator who will visit you in your Host Family home on arrival, follow up after 2 weeks and every 30 days. They are there to listen to any concerns, help with questions and needs, and is there to mediate in the event of any problem.
  • 60 hours of educational classes every 3 months
  • Completion bonus; If you stay for 6-12 months you’ll receive a completion bonus – 2000 RMB after 6 months, another 1000RMB if you extend for another 3 months and if you extend for 6 months you’ll receive another 2000 RMB.*
  • A completion certificate *
  • 24/7 Emergency Number in China plus local support and guidance, orientation on arrival
  • Guidance on learning Chinese language and culture
  • Support in NZ from our staff and within our private Nanny/Au Pair facebook group you’ll meet other Kiwis planing to do the same thing, and others already there.
*Both the bonus and certificate will be issued upon successful completion, that Au Pair finishes 75% of educational components and is approved by the Family.

What does the program cost?
  • Once we accept your application, and before your interview, you pay $450 Application fee. If we don’t think we can place or accept you we will return your application before interview.
  • Program Fee of $200US once your application is submitted to our partners in China for processing and placing.
  • A subsidised return flight surcharge depending on where you fly from will apply – NZ departures cost $600US for return flights. This is due before you fly.
  • Fees listed above include return flights and insurance (medical, travel and liability) so the only other fee to budget for is the fee to process your visa at the Chinese Embassy and the cost of getting your medical form completed.
  • Subsided flight surcharges are based on you completing your agreed contract in China. If you return home early before the end of your contract you will need to buy your own ticket home.
When can I fly?
There is one day per month you can fly. We will advise your departure date once placed with a family.
How long can I go for?
There are mostly 6-month placements available, limited availability for 3-month placements and 9, and 12 months stays are possible via visa extensions which is organised for you in China.
What you’ll be doing:
  • Spending time with, caring for, and educating your host family child/children
  • Attending Mandarin classes – 60 x 45 minute classes every 3 month period
  • Attending one cultural course each month (about 2 hours)
  • Activities as part of the Host Family Club which happen several times a year where a local co-ordinator organises activities for families and au pairs.
Where would I be placed?
Placements are usually in Beijing, Shanghai, Shenzhen, Guangzhou, Hangzhou, Ningbo, Chengdu, Taiyuan, Nanjing and Suzhou
Can I apply?
To apply you need to meet the following criteria:
  • Native/Fluent English speaker
  • Very open, friendly with a flexible attitude
  • Outgoing personality is preferred
  • A good educational background
  • Have a true love for children
  • Motivated and family-oriented
  • Actively participate in Host Family’s family time activities
  • Be aged between 18 and 29 (not having turned 30 upon arrival)
  • Single and haven’t gave birth to children (visa requirements)
  • Be high school graduate or above
  • Have no criminal record
  • Be physically and psychologically healthy (insurance reasons)
  • Be interested in Chinese culture and life
  • Enjoy caring children; have relevant experience
